Not only did the research papers find that people wanted less food on their plates, 40% said that they would pay a premium to eat in a restaurant which had a commitment to reducing the amount of food was wasted. 30% said that they felt food waste was the responsibility of caterers to deal with in terms of reduction, a fringe element of 4% believed that it was the government’s responsibility to deal with waste food.

Unilever say that the results show that the emphasis on reducing food waste is moving from the domestic to the commercial and pressure was increasing for restaurants, be they chippies, burger and pizza chains or hotels and Michelin Starred establishments to reduce the amount of waste that goes into their bins at the end of each shift.

When I was young we weren’t often allowed into the front room at my grandma’s house as it was ‘for best.’ When visitors cam around they were shown in, that and Christmas were the only occasions that the front room was ever used.

Today it’s not the front room that’s most likely to be used for entertaining but the kitchen itself. In the words of Jona Lewie:“You’ll always find me in the kitchen at parties.” As that’s where the party’s at these days.

But most of us don’t live in houses that were designed for entertaining in the kitchen, in most modern houses they’re too small, designed, as they were with that watchword of the twentieth century in mind, “convenience.” Unfortunately convenience isn’t best suited to fine dining, houses designed from the 1940s onwards provided ever smaller kitchens as it was thought that our nutritional requirements would be served through prepackaged TV dinners and ultimately pills, if Dan Dare was anything to go by.

As the way we entertain and socialise has changed the demands we put on our houses has too. Most people want a kitchen in which friends can gather, sit, chat and mingle. Doing that in a galley kitchen is going to prove more than problematic!

If you’re thinking of remodeling your kitchen, either to freshen it up or to cater to the growing demands you’re putting on it there are a few things that you should bear in mind.

  • Pay heed to the existing architecture,  if renovating you have to adapt to the restrictions placed upon you by the original build, changing it too much can result in major construction work.
  • Make the work feel natural, consider the layout and what you can do to enhance it given its limitations
  • Be imaginative. If you’ve not much space then perhaps white goods even including the freezer could be sited elsewhere, like a conservatory or garage in order to free up space where you need it most.

Keep a clear idea of what you want to achieve. Having a strong design ethic is a bonus to creativity, not a disadvantage. If you know exactly what you want you’ll think up imaginative ways to achieve your goals rather than making do with solutions which kind of almost meet up to your standards.

If you’re on a budget but don’t want your kitchen to look like it was, well, designed on a budget there are tricks that you can pull to make your dining area look stunning.

Investing in furniture and goodies like glassware and crockery from outlets such as IKEA gives your kitchen a contemporary look. Adding finishes such as funky colours which aren’t normally available and putting unusual surfaces on them make your flat pack solution into something unique. Think about spraying with carpaint which comes in an almost infinite range of colours and putting coloured Perspex surfaces on things such as trolleys and tables.

The result will be a range of individual pieces which coordinate the way you want them to without following the manufacturers’ script.

 

A flooring which is becoming more and more popular is rubber. These days it’s available odour-free, it’s resilient, warm underfoot and comfortable, non slip and easily repaired should it become damaged.

  • It’s okay to go out of network – Dental insurance companies will give you a list of preferred dentists to go to. That list might not be adequate to serve your dental needs. Search for the dentist that will accept (even if out of network) your dental treatment and that has the ability to provide the proper treatment and environment for your dental needs and comfort
  • Call the office to see how they treat you – From the moment you first contact a dental office, you should feel comfortable. Make sure their greeting to you is a warm one. That can be a great indicator of the kind of treatment to expect while in the office
  • Visit the office – If you’re looking at doing some significant dental treatment, you might consider going to the office first and getting a tour. You can learn a lot by meeting everyone and seeing the facilities you will receive your dental treatment in

Why Lounge Around When Flying Budget Airlines?

Flying anywhere is always going to be unpleasant unless you go first class every time. Even then you’ll still be a victim of jetlag, DVTs, screaming children and compression/decompression earaches. Well I do anyway.

For most people the whole airport experience is an awful yet unavoidable aspect of taking a foreign holiday; it’s not surprising that cruises are still so popular, you may not get anywhere quickly but at least the getting there is pleasant instead of being curled up into an uncomfortable ball with a six year old kicking the back of your seat mid-tantrum. (You can guess I don’t appreciate flying much, can’t you?)

But I digress. Travellers today, rather than cutting costs when it comes to travel have realised that the checking in and boarding process needn’t be a barely tolerable preamble to the main torture event. Instead travellers are paying the few extra pounds it costs to use the lounge before flying.

Fly Economy but Love The Lounge

If you read Travel Trade Gazette you’ll have seen that, rather counter-intuitively given these cash-strapped times, while passengers are flying economy or on budget airlines, they are still treating themselves to the comforts of the lounge before they embark. It seems people have had enough of noisy uncomfortable airports and instead are looking to spend a few pounds on taking advantage of the lounge to get something to eat and drink, have a sit down and wait in comfort until it’s time to board the ‘plane.

Travel agents love these add-ons as they improve their commission and so they are making more and more people aware of them, not just the A listers and the VIPs but anyone who’s taking a trip and knows how stressful flying can be. In the UK the biggest growth has been at Manchester’s new Terminal One Lounge, which is up by 89% and the Leeds Bradford Premier Lounge, which is up by 180%.

There are currently dozens of lounges which are available to the traveller all over the UK and as the craze continues to grow so will the number of lounges which are available, both at home in the UK and abroad. Traditionally it has been the airlines themselves which have set the standards for lounges, Virgin’s V-Room for their own passengers at Gatwick has been popular since it opened and they expect to open another in Manchester in July. The V-Room cost £20 per adult and has gaming and play areas, an adults-only space and bar.

Diners Ignore Healthy Meals At The Takeaway Store

It’s an important part of most fast food chain’s public reputation to offer a healthier menu from the typical burgers, fried chicken and pizza (not withstanding the KFC Double Down which replaces the ‘traditional’ bun with two chicken fillets), however, a recent survey has found that fewer than 3% of customers actually order them.

Louise Atkinson surveyed over 1000 Subway franchises and McDonald’s outlets, asking customers about what they were buying as part of a study that took two months to compile.

Atkinson, who is herself an accredited dietician, found that only around 2.5% of diners who ordered a main meal chose from the menus that contained meals with, what she describes  as, ‘substantial nutritional value.’ These meals included that McDonald’s Heart Foundation “Tick Approved” options or Subway’s ‘Six Grams Of Fat Or Less’ sandwiches.

Because of the obesity epidemic throughout the developed world, many fast food chains are offering a healthier or lighter meal option. A McDonald’s salad may contain more fat than some of their burgers but they certainly contain more vegetables so perhaps that’s a fait accompli.

Atkinson said “to their credit, they’ve created items that offer customers a choice, but our research shows that customers just aren’t choosing to eat these meals. If people were choosing a healthy option over a hamburger and fries then it’s a positive move. But they’re not.

“The problem with the traditional fast food take-aways is that they are typically kilojoule-laden and contain fewer vegetables.” Atkinson added.

Sales and advertising spokespeople claim that is the customers’ responsibility to take up the healthier options that they are being presented with as the fast food chains were providing healthy meals and a helping of social responsibility with their lower fat, lower salt, lower sugar meals.

Assistant professor of Marketing, Petra Bouvain said “these results are not surprising, McDonalds has positioned itself as a fast food business. While people may be aware of the healthy choices through advertising and controversies in the media, they don’t go to McDonalds for a macrobiotic meal.”

It was felt that there are essentially two groups in society, those who are prepared to chow down on junk food and sugary drinks, not caring about the health consequences and those who are increasingly looking for healthy options. The people who care and want to find food which is going to be good for them are not the type who are ever going to set foot inside a fast food joint to find something to eat so the nutritional value of their healthy meals does far more good to their public image than it does for any of their diners.
