I’m constantly being asked by local small businesses owners, “How do I get the right followers on Twitter. I mean, the whole world uses it right? I need to communicate with customers that will actually walk into the front door of my business.”
Basically, what they are saying (trying to say) is that they are looking for a way to target and market to a specific group of people with Twitter. Currently, they’re tweeting and following some of the top business and marketing people on Twitter and they even have a few followers themselves, sometimes thousands, but they still don’t know how relevant their group of followers is to their business. Occasionally a customer will come from it
Some of them have been tweeting hundreds and thousands of tweets, but only have a few followers as well.
STOP WASTING TIME!!!
Okay, I’ll get to the point… So how do you do it? I’ll give you three tips to start getting the targeted followers that you have always wanted on Twitter. I’m assuming you’ve opened your account already:
- In the Twitter Search bar, search for the name of the city that your business is located in and find out if your city has a Twitter account.
- If your city has a twitter account, FOLLOW IT FOR CRYING OUT LOUD!!!! If they don’t have one, then you’ll probably find other organizations or businesses who are from your city. Follow them too! Follow as many people as you can (less than 500 daily so your account doesn’t get suspended by Twitter).
- Repeat the first two steps for surrounding cities that you might get customers from. I hope you get customers from cities other than your own… It gives you a much broader audience to be able to connect with on Twitter. If not, focus on your city and follow as many people as you can.
Okay, you’re saying, so how does that get me followers? When you follow someone, it alerts them that they’ve been followed and allows them to follow you back if they choose to. If it’s another local business, chances are that they’ll see your tweets and know that you’re local and follow you, which reminds me…
If you’re new to Twitter, make sure you tweet about 20 times before you start becoming friends with people on Twitter and make sure they are good valuable tweets and not just spam. I’ll be sharing ways to provide great Twitter content to your followers soon, as well as other Twitter tips, in the near future.
Also, I’d share with you a tool that searches for local followers automatically on Twitter, but the one that I knew of just stopped the service. If any of you know of one that will search for local tweeters, please share with a comment. Sometimes these tools don’t work so well for location because Twitter allows you to put anything in your Location form, but they will save you time initially, then you can manually add local tweeps later. Questions, comments?
